𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: 𝗢𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝗰𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 It was an honor leading the Jobberman Youth Engagement & Learning team as 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝, 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧 to coordinate a 2-day soft skills training for final-year students at Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Nigeria — my alma mater, where I graduated over 10 years ago. As part of their graduation week, we organized impactful sessions on soft skills and employability training, including: • 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 & 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭  • 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧  • 𝐄𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞  • 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬  • 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 & 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 I designed and led the execution of this training program, joined by my colleague Mary Ameh and our lead facilitators Adepoju Joel ( Agba Trainer) and Mubarak Oyedele. Returning to the same halls where I once sat as an uncertain final-year student felt surreal. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘵? 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦, 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘴. I also had the opportunity to speak to the students, and remind them that their dreams are valid. With intentionality, growth, and the right people around you, anything is possible. Back then, I struggled with 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 and direction. But over the years, I’ve grown through learning, experience, and reflection. One module that truly changed me is 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, part of the 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 training. It helped me embrace who I am, understand my strengths as an introvert, and find my place in a fast-moving world. 𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐭 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧’𝐭 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥; 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲’𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲’𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞. This training was made possible through Jobberman Nigeria partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, focused on improving the employability of youth (ages 18–35) across Nigeria through relevant and practical training programs. Since 2021, we’ve trained over 5,000 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐁𝐚𝐛𝐜𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 and reached 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐰𝐢𝐝𝐞. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞. 🧠 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘦, 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧-𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨. Sometime ago, I recommended a young chap I knew early on for a job. My recommendation was purely motivated by his industry experience and, of course, his growing influence in the virtual space. Out of curiosity, my team immediately asked to set up a meeting with him. On the day of the meeting, the young man not only arrived late, but he also spent most of the conversation with his phone in his face. What broke the camel’s back was his decision to delve into personal experiences, many of which were considered taboo and largely unrelated to the theme of discussion. There’s no doubt his confidence level was impressive, but his soft skills were clearly subpar. This experience reminded me of the unmatched value of soft skills, traits like emotional intelligence, communication, adaptability, respect for others' time, and situational awareness. No matter how technically sound or confident you may be, without these skills, you risk shutting doors that your qualifications alone cannot open. The good news? Soft skills can be learned and improved.
