A gift from my mentor, Mr. Headworld Esene During the Standard Chartered Women in Technology Initiative (WITI), in partnership with the Enterprise Development Centre, Pan-Atlantic University (EDC), my colleague Omowunmi Omoseyindemi and I were assigned a mentor, Mr. Headworld Esene, to guide us in developing our pitch deck and coaching us on our business.   I learned a great deal about business growth from him. He happened to be a grant master and he gifted me a scholarship to attend the School of Grant Success, which he founded. I joined the Cohort 3 of the program, it lasted six weeks and provided me with a clear understanding of grants. We were divided into groups with accountable partners, and I was in Group 6 with some amazing team members. We called ourselves Team Collabo.   The course offered comprehensive training, emphasizing that not all grant application calls are suitable for every business. We were taught how to write a concept note, and measure impact, and we also had sessions with experts in investment and proposal writing. One of the highlights was learning about angel investing from the renowned Mr. Harry 'Tomi Davies.   I am truly grateful for the gift from my mentor, Headworld Esene, and the opportunity to learn the art and science of grant writing. I now feel better equipped to position myself for applying for grants to scale my business. A big thank you to him!   Being among the top 10 demonstrates that I have gained significant knowledge in grant writing, and I am ready to take on any grant writing assignments. The Nigerian government has been actively supporting the development of mechanical skills in universities and colleges through various initiatives and policies. It is the duty of policy implementers at all levels of skills development to tackle acquisition of relevant skills, to ensure gainful youth, employment both at home and abroad. This effort can be sustained if the training institutions persistently canvass the requisite equipment and tools for students’ practical projects, throughout the duration of their training. Here are some key government efforts: 1. National Universities Commission (NUC) Initiatives: The NUC has been instrumental in promoting skills development and entrepreneurship in Nigerian universities. Their initiatives include: Collaborative Ties: Encouraging strong partnerships between academia and industry to create sustainable opportunities for creativity and innovation1. Entrepreneurial University Concept: Promoting student internship programs that guarantee the acquisition of specific sectorial skills for employability1. Curriculum Development: Facilitating university-industry partnerships to embed entrepreneurship training and skills development into the curriculum1. 2. National Policy on Education (NPE) The NPE emphasizes the importance of vocational and technical education. It aims to address the high unemployment rate among graduates by ensuring that secondary and higher education institutions focus on skills acquisition and development 3. Key aspects include: Skills Acquisition: Integrating vocational and technical education into the higher education curriculum to produce graduates with employable skills. 4. Specific University Programs: Several Nigerian universities, eg. the University of Minna and the University of Abuja have established robust mechanical engineering programs that emphasize practical skills development, using hands-on training in workshops equipped with modern machinery. University of Abuja in particular focuses on areas such as energy, fluid mechanics, and manufacturing processes. 5. Government and Industry Partner to facilitate skills development, brand incubation centers as part of entrepreneurship study centers in universities; 6. Financial Support: From the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to align graduate SME loan schemes with university entrepreneurship programs. 7. Tackles insufficient supply of workshop equipment and tools to technical colleges, which are often saddled with insufficient time for practical projects and suffocated by general-studies subjects. A blatant deceit that renders technical college products unemployable. If there is not enough synergy between government efforts and output of policy implementers; with adequate feedback and supervision, the products of those training institutions would constitute a substandard workforce. And the country would degenerate to the tragedy of dependence on daily handout of mineral-oil money, which is the paradox of a proud giant of Africa.
